This week, since me and Mathew cannot meet up to write anything, we experimented with some software called “Jamkazzam.” This software is supposedly allows two people to jam remotely from their own homes without latency being an issue.
First, I downloaded the software and configured my computer and microphone. My latency was showing up green which meant it was low. This made me hopeful for the result. Me and Mathew then arranged a time to have a session.
Here is some video footage of us trying it out. (Unfortunately, there is no audio since my audio drivers were being utilized by the app).
We could hear each other's audio coming through so we knew we had set up correctly. However, when I started playing a beat and Matthew joined in, I could instantly tell the audio was completely out of sync. It made playing with each other completely impossible. Sometimes, when both our latencies dipped, we would be in sync for a few moments but we would quickly become out of phase once again. We found that this was far too inconsistent to reliably use while practicing. Due to this, we have to compromise by coming up with ideas separately and then sending them to the other member so that they could add their layer over the top. This is how we will be working from now on.
